A 2021 SNP-genotyping study (D'Onofrio et al., Frontiers in Plant Science) established Aglianico as a southwestern Italian founder variety ancestral to multiple other Italian cultivars, directly contradicting the traditional Greek-origin narrative embedded in its name.
