First written down · 1914, Lugo and Ourense, Spain
Early records in Galicia cite it as Mouratón and as Negreda in nearby towns in 1914. Genetic work groups Mouratón within a lineage centered on Merenzao in northwestern Spain. Today most plantings are in Arribes and eastern Galicia, with 635 hectares recorded in Spain in 2021.
