A deliberate cross of Diagalves and Fernão Pires made in 1951 at the Estação Agronómica Nacional by Leão Ferreira de Almeida led to Seara Nova. It is planted in the Lisboa region and authorized in several DOCs there and in DoTejo and on the Azores islands; Lisboa had about 454 hectares in 2020. Work on intravarietal variability in Portugal classifies Seara Nova as a young cross with low clonal diversity.
