Terret gris is a color mutation of Terret noir from Languedoc, probably from Hérault. The first reliable mention of Terret in Languedoc dates to 1736. It was used for wines made to be distilled in the 17th and 18th centuries and for vermouth in the 19th and early 20th century, then plantings fell toward the end of the 20th century.
