Karthäuserhof
2018 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Alte Reben Riesling Trocken 750mL
A perfect showcase for how aged Riesling from a top Mosel estate can simultaneously add depth and complexity while retaining freshness and cut. The fruit comes from Karthäuserhofberg, Karthäuserhof's historic monopole in the Mosel, from a special selection of vines around 50 years old, rooted in Devonian slate on south to southwest slopes at 160 to 275 meters. Fermented in large oak, then matured on the lees—the spent yeast that adds texture—for at least eight months, it channels the site's mineral drive with a supple feel.
Ultimately a mineral-driven wine, with layers of crunchy apple, stone fruit, nutmeg, and white pepper. Contrasting that mineral cut, however, is a creamy texture, with a long, fresh finish as nutmeg lingers.

Karthäuserhof
The 8th-oldest winery on record, Karthäuserhof traces its history on this slope to 1335, when Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg granted the farm and vines to the Carthusian order. The monopole Karthäuserhofberg sits right by the cellars and is the source for all the estate’s wines. Hand harvesting is the rule, fermentations rely on native yeast, and the cellar uses stainless steel and large seasoned oak in a patient, minimalist style.
Run today by Albert Behler, who took over the estate from his cousin Christoph Tyrell in 2012, the team farms organically with biodynamic principles, avoids herbicides, and picks by parcel to protect the vineyard’s detail in the glass.
