Dominio de las Abejas
Dominio de las Abejas is a progressive, natural winery based in Valle de Ojos Negros, Baja California, Mexico. Founded in 2015 by Mauricio Ruiz Cantú and his family, the project was designed from the outset to be a sustainable, climate-resilient estate. The vineyards sit at about 2,200 feet elevation in a former marshland, which contributes to the soil’s exceptional organic content. Farmed organically and certified by CCOF, the estate uses composting, straw cover crops, and absolutely no agrochemicals. The bee on the labels reflects the winery’s name, Dominio de las Abejas, or “Domain of the Bees”, and symbolizes their commitment to biodiversity, organic farming, and ecological balance in the vineyard. Just as bees sustain life in the ecosystem, the winery aims to create wines that are alive, expressive, and in harmony with nature. The winery follows a strict natural winemaking philosophy, relying on wild fermentations, avoiding fining or filtration, and using only minimal sulfites at bottling. This low-intervention approach allows the wines to speak clearly of their origin and varietal character. Among their core offerings are "Néctar de Campo", a co-fermented red blend, and "Naranja", a skin-contact white, both of which highlight the vibrant, expressive style the winery is known for.
Néctar de Campo is made from Grenache, Nero d’Avola, Carignan, and Cinsault, all harvested on the same day and fermented together, resulting in a layered, medium-bodied red with freshness, depth, and savory detail. Naranja is a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Colombard, and Marsanne blend, fermented on skins for about 18 days. The wine is aromatic, textural, and clean, with citrus peel, dried fruit, and a lightly tannic grip. Both wines capture the energy and clarity that define Dominio de las Abejas’ place in the new wave of Mexican winemaking.
