Founded in the mid-1990s by the late Ferdinando Zanusso and now led by his son Mario, the winery is located in Friuli Venezia Giulia in Italy, near the Slovenian border. They’re working with old vines, some nearly a century old, planted on ancient marl soils, farming organically and harvesting entirely by hand. The family's philosophy is grounded in restraint: indigenous grapes, native yeasts, no new oak, and minimal intervention. Wines are fermented slowly, often at ambient temperatures, and aged on the lees in stainless steel to preserve their natural structure and energy. The result is a lineup of quietly powerful wines that capture the purity and precision of Friuli.

Two bottlings in particular that are now in the shop show the depth of their vision: “A Tessa”, named for Ferdinando’s granddaughter, is a stunning expression of Ribolla Gialla with bright lemon zest, white flowers, and a pronounced mineral edge. Its dry, saline finish and delicate texture highlight the purity and restraint of the Friulian terroir. On the red side, I Clivi’s Schioppettino, sourced from a high-elevation vineyard, is a fresh, spicy take on one of Friuli’s most characterful native grapes, Ribolla Nera aka Schioppettino. It’s got lifted aromatics that are both savory and floral with sour cherry and white pepper. Delicately structured with bright acidity and fine tannins. An interesting alternative to Pinot Noir with the regional character of Fruili.
With I Clivi, the Zanusso family continues to prove that the most enduring wines come from patience, humility, and a deep respect for the land.
