Rosi Schuster
Founded in 1979 by Rosi and Franz Schuster in Austria’s Burgenland, the estate began as a small family project utilizing vineyards the couple had long farmed themselves. Both were already deeply involved in the region’s wine world, and together they built a winery focused on expressing the character of Burgenland’s villages and soils. After Franz passed away in 2007, their son Hannes Schuster took over the estate, continuing the work his parents started while quietly guiding the winery into a new era. Trained in viticulture and already experimenting with small batches at the family property, Hannes soon developed a reputation as one of the region’s most respected producers.
Today the 35-acre estate is farmed organically, with a focus on healthy soils, old vines, and native Austrian grape varieties like Blaufränkisch, Sankt Laurent, and Rotburger. In the cellar, Hannes works with a light touch—spontaneous fermentation, long lees aging, and minimal sulfur—allowing the vineyards themselves to shape the wines. International varieties once planted on the estate have gradually been removed in favor of local grapes that better reflect Burgenland’s identity. The result is a lineup of wines that feel both classic and vibrant, known for their purity, elegance, and easy drinkability.
A great introduction to the style is the newest addition of Schuster wines to the shop, “Aus den Dörfern,” meaning “from the villages”. This is a blend that brings together fruit from several sites across Burgenland. Combining Blaufränkisch, Sankt Laurent, and Rotburger, it captures the broader character of the region—fresh, lively, and balanced, with bright red fruit and gentle spice. Great with a slight chill on these warm days! Zum Wohl!
